I am writing this additional letter home following a disturbing incident last night relating to the railway line which runs along the back of the Oakley Vale community. It was reported to me this morning by concerned parents, and I have confirmed the incident with our local police, that a train had to stop as there were children on the railway line. This is obviously a very serious incident and one which we have discussed with all of the children in assembly this morning. I have also arranged for our PCSO, Anita Hambly, and her Sergeant to come into school on Wednesday next week to speak to the children about safety around trains and the local line. I would urge all parents to discuss this issue with their children and to emphasize the serious nature of the incident and of the potentially fatal consequences of playing around the railway line. As a school we will be engaging with our local councillors to ascertain what can be done to make the line safer and to limit access to the tracks especially as we move towards the school summer holidays in six weeks time.

On a lighter note I would like to draw you attention to the following two events happening over the next week:

Oakley Vale 'Ground Force' Saturday

Appeal for help… on Saturday 13th June we need your help to transform the outside areas for both Reception and Year 1. We have secured additional funding to enable us to purchase the materials needed so only need willing volunteers to get the job done. We need a team of volunteers with shovels, spades, wheel barrows, powertools and general building kit to help make paths, planters and other exciting 'stuff' for the children to explore and enjoy. If any parents are able to give up some time on the 13th to help please let Mrs MacDonald or myself know or just turn up on the day. We will be at school from around 09:00 on Saturday morning and can promise endless tea, coffee, biscuits and some hard work – please come and help if you can - many hands make light work. Children are welcome to come along with their parents but should not come on their own.

Friends of Oakley Vale – Summer Fair

The Friends continue to work hard to support the school and would love to increase their numbers! From our opening meetings way back in 2008 the numbers of parents getting involved in Friends activities has waned. I would like to encourage all parents to come and get involved in the work of the Friends to support the opportunities for all children in school. The next meeting of the Friends takes place at 19:30 here at school next Wednesday evening (10th June). We particularly need volunteers to help run the Summer Fair on the 4th July, plans are well progressed and each class will be enjoying a special theme week in the run up to the event. To ensure that we have a cracking fair more help is needed.
